TrueCar is an online digital car buying marketplace that aims to make car buying simple, fair, and fun. The challenges they faced on their existing in data center technology, mostly had to do with the natural pace of business that any startup would face – scaling issues. You build an infrastructure that works for 10 people that are building something, now all of a sudden you have 100 people that are building something.

TrueCar had people on the engineering team that had been working with the infrastructure for 10 years, fixing servers, pulling out hard drives, and plugging in new ones. They tried to think outside of the box on how to leverage new technologies in the cloud to service them.

“We decided to partner with Onica to really enhance and accelerate our transition. We had developers and engineers from Onica in our office working side-by-side with our teams to help us learn and understand how to leverage the ecosystem in Amazon and help architecturally build the solutions we created. I think the partnership has been one where they are an extension of our team at this point.”

– Tommy McClung, CTO at TrueCar

AWS has been an amazing experience for TrueCar, they listened to their concerns and got their team in front of the right people inside AWS. The TrueCar team talks to every AWS product team, the folks that are doing all of the underlying network infrastructure, all the VPC work, all of the direct connect work, ELB work, you name it; they have actually been in front of their product people to talk to them about any issues they have.

When TrueCar jumped into this project, they didn’t know what they were doing. They had people who had some experience with Amazon and AWS, people that were familiar with it, but nobody that really got it.

They decided to partner with them to really enhance and accelerate their transition. They had developers and engineers from Onica in their office working side-by-side with their teams to help them learn and understand how to leverage the ecosystem in Amazon and help architecturally build the solutions they created. The partnership has been one where they have become an extension of their team.

TrueCar looks at Onica as part of the reason they’ve been able to get to where they are now. It probably would have taken them two to three times longer to do this on their own had they not been able to just tap us on the shoulder and leverage their knowledge and expertise.
