Moving an extremely large amount of data from JibJab Medias datacenter to AWS
Onica faced the challenge of moving extremely large amount of data from JibJab Medias datacenter to AWS in a fast and efficient manner without impacting service availability. Moving from datacenter to cloud-based model was necessary as both a cost-saving measure and for long-term scalability and growth.
- Efficiently moving more than 575 million files adding up to 130 TB of data for the datacenter to Amazon S3.
- Re-mapping changed file names to a new database schema.
- Building a new application around AWS best practices to replace their primary website JibJab.com.
Move the data directly from the datacenter to Amazon S3
Onica devised a plan to move the large amounts of data directly from the datacenter to Amazon S3 utilizing multiple machines to process and unpack the packages of data. A program was written which allowed multiple machines to work on the project simultaneously without overlap. A custom-built AWS/Jenkins server allows for quicker deployment. The resulting infrastructure:
- Utilizes AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure automation.
- Uses Packer for AMI provisioning and creation.
- Utilizes Chef for configuration management.
- Is fully self-healing and redundant across multiple availability zones.

Successful transition to AWS
JibJab Media made a successful transition to AWS. Moving to AWS improved scalability for JibJab Media and allows for quick adjustment for peak traffic times and the ability to scale down appropriately after traffic spikes. Replication in another zone allows for greater disaster recovery flexibility and has improved resiliency.
