Jeremy: There have been the same main database players out there for a long time, then all of a sudden Amazon Aurora showed up and the results have been tremendous, from increased throughput to overall speed and agility. What is it that you are you most excited about for our clients as we migrate them from MySQL into Amazon Aurora.
Tim: Amazon has built something that runs extremely well on the environments that they have designed in AWS. Customers are going to get much better performance out of that than some other open source tool.
Jeremy: The migration into AWS is much more seamless than it would have been just a few years ago. What are some of the things that we’re looking at from a client perspective if we’re going to consider migrating a database over to Aurora?
Tim: Using Amazon Aurora as a My SQL data injester, we can easily migrate things right over – a great advantage over the competition. Database migration tools help us because they highlight the particular issues and problems that we’ll see during the migration. It’s really all about making sure we are meeting the needs of the customers, Aurora is a good tool set that matches the needs that a lot of our customers may not have understood before.
Jeremy: There are a lot of tools that Amazon has released to combine with Aurora to increase throughput. One of the ones we are seeing today is Amazon Kinesis.
Tim: We have one customer that we’re talking to that has high volume, extremely high volume. We’re talking 18,000 to 20,000 transactions a second. And they are growing. How do you deal with that? They want to grow exponentially and take that from 18,000 to 20,000 to 40,000 to 50,000 to 100,000 transactions a second. Amazon Kinesis is one of those tools that allows them to be able to scale at that volume.
